Madison Keys breaks down in tears on the court after injury interrupts Wimbledon match against Jasmine Paolini
Madison Keys was overcome with emotion on Court One at Wimbledon after a poorly-timed injury forced her to retire against Jasmine Paolini of Italy.
In a thrilling round-of-16 encounter, the 12th seed Keys bounced back from losing the first set 3-6 to clinch the second set 7-6. She then surged to a commanding 5-2 lead in the third set over Paolini, the 7th seed and recent French Open finalist. However, at a crucial moment with the score at 15-15, Keys challenged a call that ultimately backfired, costing her the point and leading to a break point for Paolini. During the ensuing rally, Keys injured her left leg while attempting a forehand, which visibly hampered her movement.
Despite receiving medical treatment and bravely attempting to continue, Keys struggled with her mobility and began shedding tears. She managed to win a few more points, but at 5-5, she made the difficult decision to withdraw from the match.
Paolini expressed sympathy for Keys in her post-match comments, acknowledging the emotional and challenging circumstances under which the match ended.
"It's tough. A lot of ups and downs. I'm feeling a bit happy but also sad for her. It's not easy to win like that."
Paolini advances to the quarter-finals where she will face either Coco Gauff or Emma Navarro, both Americans.
The match, which had been a gripping display of skill and determination from both players, took a somber turn in its final stages as Keys battled through evident pain before reluctantly conceding defeat....See More
